Shetland’s Oiled Wildlife Response Workshop successfully united key stakeholders to boost wildlife preparedness and foster UK-wide collaboration

Our Wildlife Emergency Preparedness & Response Team is introducing a new role of Wildlife Response Operational Lead.

A successful workshop highlighted industry, government, and NGO cooperation, promoting wildlife preparedness and response across Latin America. Led by YPF/Equinor and delivered by experts, this event inspired a culture of collaboration for effective wildlife protection.

Our new responders completed an intensive 12-week training with a challenging final exercise. They managed a fictional oil spill near Portsmouth and Chichester, showcasing their readiness and teamwork.

In their first twelve weeks, our new wave of responders undergo a rigorous training process, introducing them to our different methods of responding to an oil spill, the equipment used, and scenario-based exercises to test their newly learned skills.

A recent group of new recruits documented their journey in this blog and described how varied and interesting the role of a responder can be. 

This month, we remember three significant incidents that have changed the landscape of oil spill response: the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Texas City refinery explosion, and the Alexander L. Kielland oil rig disaster.

COP28 underscores sustainable development, emphasizing low-carbon practices. OSRL pioneers responsible decommissioning in the oil and gas industry, aligning with COP28 goals. Their proactive measures, including strategic pre-deployment, showcase industry collaboration for a greener, resilient future.

The Wildlife Preparedness & Response Community of Practice (CoP) - a collaborative multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at strengthening tiered preparedness for oiled wildlife incidents - organised its first-ever virtual wildlife response exercise this month to explore the potential challenges in a transboundary oiled wildlife incident.
