Our People

Our people are professionals in their respective fields - highly experienced and qualified in the key disciplines required for advising and supporting clients in oil spill preparedness and response.

We are committed to attracting, developing and energising the very best people, recognising they are all individuals and providing them with challenging and rewarding opportunities for personal growth.

We have developed an OPITO-Approved Competency Management System which we use to manage the technical competence development of our staff in preparedness and response roles from beginner to advanced level. This covers the first four to five years of a technical career in OSRL.

The system is centred around a set of competency standards which are linked to OSRL job roles. Everyone who joins the organisation in a technical role joins a Spill Responder Course.

The Spill Responder Course is an intensive 12-week programme which takes newly hired staff and turns them into competent spill responders. We achieve this through a blend of classroom and practical training delivered by OSRL experts.

Our Spill Responder Course is unique in the industry and allows new responders the opportunity to benefit from our three decades of experience in responding to incidents world-wide.

Upon completion of the Spill Responder Course and the linked competency standard, technical staff then follow one of two tracks – Response or Consultancy. The competency standards developed for each track have significant overlap in core technical elements, allowing staff to switch tracks as they move around the organisation and support our clients in different roles.

Competency Management System

Beyond the job roles within our Competency Management System, our staff can apply their technical skills in a number of roles. Many staff move into supervisory and managerial positions; others begin to develop specialised knowledge and expertise in particular disciplines – for example shoreline response or surveillance, modeling and visualisation (SMV).

OSRL has developed a framework which allows us to manage the development of deep technical expertise in these specialised disciplines, giving individuals space to become subject matter experts and in turn contributing to furthering knowledge internally and in the wider industry. In fact, we have trained and prepared many experts for the industry, with 40% of our employees who leave OSRL, joining member companies
