Incident and Crisis Management

Be ready for anything, helping you respond quickly to the unexpected

You get that dreaded call, the call that instantly spreads a wave of anxiety and adrenaline through your body.

"Something's happened; we need you to come in right away. We're activating the crisis management team."

Your heart races as you enter the office. When you arrive, you find there has been a significant data breach, compromising sensitive customer information. As you join the rest of the crisis management team, you realise none of you has trained recently, and you are all in freeze mode, unsure of what to do next.

You start going through your crisis management plan, but you all struggle to remember the details. It has been months since any of you have trained or even thought about your roles in a crisis.

You all move slowly, hesitating at every step. You don’t really get the situation under control until the following day by which time many of your customers are extremely unhappy and threatening to take their business elsewhere. You all feel a sense of relief that the situation is under control but know as a team you failed to perform at your best. It had been a long overdue wake-up call, and you realise that crisis management is too important to leave to chance.

In today's fast-paced world, unexpected events and crises can happen in any industry. We specialize in helping organizations be prepared for anything. Our experts work with you to identify risks, develop crisis plans, and provide comprehensive training. With our help, you can confidently tackle any crisis.

We tailor custom solutions to your specific needs. Our team helps you identify weak spots and build resilience for incidents like oil spills, accidents, or security threats. We ensure your team is competent and confident in responding to any situation.

We collaborate closely with you to understand your organization and challenges. We develop realistic scenarios based on real risks and operations, creating customized solutions. We value your input at every stage of the design process.

Our simulations provide realistic training experiences. Role players respond to your Crisis Management team's decisions, evolving the scenarios accordingly.

After training, we provide structured feedback to improve performance. We help identify areas for additional training and empower your team with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively in any crisis.

Incident and Crisis Management Team Training

Incident Management Team Training

Incidents can be unpredictable, and their state may not be immediately apparent

Therefore, incident management involves gaining control by identifying the incident's evolving nature. Despite being smaller in scale than crises, incidents require businesses to prepare for them. In the first 48 hours of an incident, it's essential to have a competent team capable of hitting the ground running.

The ability to scale up your Incident Management Team (IMT) within the first 48 hours of an incident is critical to an effective response. We'll work with you to identify your strengths and weaknesses and provide training that helps you become genuinely competent in responding to any situation. We focus on building your confidence so that responding to incidents becomes second nature. With our "Performing Under Pressure" toolkit, we can provide the tools you need to perform consistently at your best.

Crisis Management Team Training

In a crisis, time is your enemy. Time is the one thing you can't buy

And when a crisis hits, that clock starts ticking, and you want to be ahead of the game, not playing catch up.

That's why your Crisis Management Team (CMT) must be fully prepared and equipped to hit the ground running from the start. They need the knowledge and skills to respond swiftly and effectively, even when facing incomplete information and high-pressure situations.

At the heart of successful crisis response is the competence of your team. That's why we;

  • prioritise developing the skills and expertise of your CMT,
  • design training programs and crisis simulations to help your team perform under pressure, make quick decisions, and confidently respond to changing circumstances,
  • make it feel real,
  • run simulations that create a learning environment which is immersive and experiential, where people have real roles to play,
  • throw you into a scenario which can feel very real, mimicking the pressure of a real crisis and challenging your crisis management team to perform.

Our goal is to ensure that your CMT is fully prepared to handle any situation that comes their way and can make decisions with confidence, even in the face of uncertainty.

Don't let time be your enemy in a crisis. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help your team be fully prepared and equipped to respond swiftly and effectively, no matter what challenges they face.

Incident and Crisis Management Exercises: Test Your Incident and Crisis Management Teams

Exercises offer a unique opportunity for incident and crisis management team members to:

  • practice their roles and responsibilities,
  • get senior management buy-in to incident and crisis management planning, and
  • validate end-to-end business continuity arrangements.

While having a plan is essential, it is equally important to embed it within an organisation to ensure that teams can use it effectively.

Our exercises range from desktop exercises to full-scale simulations and everything in between. On the left of the scale, we would describe desktop exercises as an opportunity for the team to become more familiar with an organisation's crisis plans and structures. Further along the scale, the challenge increases, perhaps for groups with incident and crisis experience. At the scale's far right, a simulation contains significant challenges, just as in a real crisis. To create a genuinely realistic environment, we will work with several of your people to build the story. A "Sim-Cell" will place challenging phone calls and emails into the team(s) being tested, simulating a real-world scenario.

Performing Under Pressure Toolkit

Performing under pressure means maintaining composure and producing desired results in a high-pressure, stressful, or challenging situation. It involves handling stress, thinking clearly, and completing tasks effectively and efficiently under pressure.

Our ability to perform in each moment is determined mainly by where we place our attention and how we make sense of the situation. It explains why even the most competent people can fail to perform at their full potential, especially under pressure.

We approach mindset as a skill. It can be broken down and learnt; this forms the basis of our performing under pressure training. Our courses and exercises use techniques derived from sports, the military, psychology, and neuroscience.

We will teach you how to change how your body and brain respond to stress, allowing you to perform at your best, even under pressure. Learn proven techniques to reduce stress, boost focus, and increase resilience.

Effective Crisis Communications in Oil Spills

Emergencies move quickly, and in today's age of social media, community reporting, and fake news, being prepared is essential.

For effective crisis response, it is crucial to be ready to respond within 15 minutes and have a plan in place.

For many years, there has been a perception that crisis communications is a complex and mystifying process that can only be effectively handled by experienced journalists or media professionals. However, recent incidents have challenged this when even seasoned crisis communication professionals have made significant missteps.

While experience and expertise are undoubtedly significant, crisis communications are ultimately about:

  • effective communication,
  • transparency, and
  • accountability.

We offer an immersive and experiential approach to crisis communication training that takes you through a 15-30-60-90 crisis communications model and tests your ability to communicate effectively at every stage. Our crisis communications training focuses on oil spills, a complex and high-profile emergency that can have significant environmental, wildlife, and human health impacts and attract intense media scrutiny.

We cover technical terms and oil spill response jargon such as tarballs, VOCs, and dispersants, how you can explain them and help you understand the questions you might receive and how to answer them effectively.

So, don't wait until a crisis occurs - start building your crisis communication skills today to be better prepared for future emergencies.

An Exercise Evolving into a Real Emergency Management

During one training session, the client suffered a real cyber-attack on their IT systems. The training was quickly postponed and the OSRL team were asked to assist with the emergency in the incident command post.

“This type of exercise is extremely useful to test our capability and processes. The training has been so successful that people from other departments outside the emergency management team are requesting to be part of the next training.”

Crisis Management Refresher for Total E&P Denmark

We have had the pleasure of working with our member Total E&P Denmark (TEPDK) since 2017, helping them build and maintain the confidence and competence of their Emergency Management Team (EMT). We recently returned to Denmark to resume this training programme and further develop the skills of TEPDK EMT Members.

“I did enjoy the training, it was insightful and the simulations felt authentic enough to be able to immerse yourself in. Certainly a useful 2 ½ days.” Stephen Patterson, Well Abandonment & Integrity Manager, TEP DK Wells.
