Enhance your understanding of oil spill response requirements within the UKCS.

This BEIS-accredited training course is the level of training required for all Environmental Advisors within an Emergency Response Room during an oil spill incident.

Is this course for me?

If you will be undertaking the role of an Environmental Advisor within an Emergency Response Room during an oil spill response, this course is essential and will enhance your understanding of oil spill response requirements within the UKCS.

If you have already taken the OPEP Level 3 course and are required to be qualified to OPEP Level 4 by your company, or if you require your training to have International recognition or require to be trained to an IMO Level 2 standard, then you are required to undertake a further 8 hours of practical deployment training.

This can be easily carried out by taking part in two practical deployment exercises on either the OPEP Level 4 training course (IMO Level 2 equivalent) or our flagship On-Scene Commander training course (IMO Level 2) and will involve just two days on the course. Please contact us for further details.

What will I learn?

Over the three days of the OPEP Level 3 training course, through interactive participation you will receive a comprehensive overview of oil spill response from preparedness activities to applicable spill response techniques. This course outlines the statutory reporting requirements and which relevant UK government agencies you may require to have ongoing communications with.

The course also ensures you gain an understanding of the role of the Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSREP) and the functions of the Operations Control Unit (OCU) and how they could potentially interface with your company and other relevant government agencies.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Assessing the situation and activating the Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (OPEP);
  • Developing a spill response strategy;
  • Establishment and organisation of a response structure;
  • Activation of spill response operations;
  • Management and control of an ongoing spill response;
  • Assisting in the decisions to deactivate a response.

Course Reviews

"The added value is the facilitators’ in-field experience and ability to bring the presentation material to life with great stories and insight of real responses and hands-on knowledge. Excellent!"

"Very interactive, which keeps you interested and a better chance of retaining the information."

"Facilitators were excellent, informative and engaging."

"The course design is very clear and methodical. Very easy to follow and structure flowed well. Great format. Again, allowing trained responders to deliver the training brings the course content to life and is great for discussion.  Note - minimal paper/online delegate instructions are a great improvement. Excellent."

"Thanks very much for the fun and informative DECC Level 3 course over the past few days. From the first morning the course was really enjoyable. Gillian and Lucy made us feel very welcome and are both great trainers.  The enthusiasm of the presenters was evident, and they made sure we were participating throughout.  It is clear that a lot of work has been put into the course material to make it interactive, engaging, and useful.

Possibly the most enjoyable course I’ve attended, I would definitely recommend OSRL training. Well done! "
