Managing Consultant, Response Consultants UK Limited

Confidently assess oil spills and their consequences, and know how to effectively activate your Oil Spill Emergency Plan (OPEP).

This interactive and informative course guides you step-by-step through a realistic scenario, providing up-to-date guidance on current legislation, reporting procedures and response strategies.

This course is essential for all Offshore Installation Managers (OIMs) and other offshore personnel responsible for assessing oil spills and their consequences, activating oil spill emergency plans (OPEP’s) and reporting pollution incidents to authorities. This course will give you the required Department for Business, Environment and Industry Strategy (BEIS) training.

This qualification is only recognised within the UK and does not have any international equivalent under IMO Level standards. It is recommended that any OIM likely to have an expanded role or responsibility operating in international waters should undertake the full equivalent of an IMO Level 2 course, Oil Spill Clearance - On-Scene Commander.

To retain existing certification this course must be retaken within 36 months.

Consisting of seven modules, this course guides you step-by-step through a realistic scenario, providing training on key aspects of oil spills such as UK regulation, reporting procedures and response strategies.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Oil spill response strategies and how to effectively activate an oil spill emergency plan (OPEP)
  • Assessing the incident and its inherent risks
  • The principles of dispersant spraying and the oil weathering process
  • How to predict the movement of spilled oil and how to quantify oil slicks
  • Offshore reporting procedures required under OPRC conventions and UK legislation
  • Completion of a PON 1 form
  • The role of the Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSREP) for Maritime Salvage and Intervention
  • The function of the Operations Control Unit (OCU) and how they interface with your company and other agencies

Delivered through e-learning, you will have access to OSRL’s online learning management system (LMS). This innovative digital learning system allows you to conveniently manage your study time over single or multiple sessions.

Taken at your own pace, the average time for completion of this course is around 4 hours.
