Course details

Enhance your knowledge of shoreline response and the Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique (SCAT) Programme. Become competent SCAT Team member, allowing for an effective and efficient response.

A shoreline response can become a complex management issue and pose the greatest challenge, as well as potentially becoming the most expensive part of an incident especially during a prolonged response. A well established and proven systematic approach agreed by management and stakeholders can assist in the efficient and effective use of resources to an agreed end point. The REMOTE field exercise supplements the classroom sessions and allow delegates to attain actual skills in the site assessment, development of treatment recommendations and end-point criteria.

What is SCAT?

Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique (SCAT) is a well-established systematic approach which is used to document the status of oiled shorelines and their subsequent treatment recommendations (i.e. clean-up methods). This systematic approach was initially developed in 1989 during the Nestucca and Exxon Valdez shoreline responses and was widely used during the Macondo incident in 2010 to assess the degree of oiling and identify suitable clean-up methods.

Is this course for me?

This course is perfect for those required to plan for and/or establish a SCAT Programme during response. This is an ideal course for those required to be part of a SCAT response field team, as well as those wishing to gain a better understanding of the process.

Planning staff: Environmental and SCAT Team Members, including Oil Spill Response Organisations (OSRO’s), Regulators, Government departments, Non-Government Organisations (NGO’s)

Personnel responsible for shoreline assessments and environmental sensitivity considerations

Operational staff responsible for setting shoreline response priorities and tactics

Individuals involved with Geographical Information System (GIS) input and SCAT data management who require a better understanding of the SCAT process.

What will I learn?

This course looks at the fundamentals needed to implement and be part of a SCAT programme; from looking at the character and dynamics of coastal zones and how oil behaves on different shoreline types, to managing a shoreline assessment programme and developing the most appropriate end-points.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding in following areas:

The physical processes and coastal characters of various shorelines

Familiarity with the systematic approach of the SCAT program

Appreciation of the terms and definitions used throughout the process

Conducting remote field exercises to utilise the documentation in real-time and obtaining physical outputs that underpin learning
