Course details

This two-day course was developed collaboratively by Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) with Wildbase at Massey University. The course was created to provide skills and a holistic view of Wildlife Response during oil spill incidents.

The main objective is to relate Wildlife Planning and Response Strategies to the wider oil spill response, for example, viewing Wildlife Response, not in isolation but rather as an integral aspect to the totality of the response effort.

Is this course right for me?

This course is aimed at operators in Asia-Pacific Region particularly in countries where awareness and regulatory framework on wildlife response is not yet established or has recently started the journey on addressing these challenges.

While the course is designed for those who have some background in oil spill response and preparedness, this course applies to in-field response supervisors and decision-makers. More specifically the content of this course would be appropriate for:

  • Members of Incident Management Team (IMT) such as,
    • Incident Commander;
    • Section Chiefs – Operation, Planning and Logistics;
    • Technical Specialists – Environment Unit Lead and Wildlife Specialists;
    • Wildlife Branch Management;
    • Wildlife Strike Teams;
  • Environmental Advisors; and
  • On-site subject matter experts who need to know how to manage and handle oil spill response matters.

What will I learn?

The course intends to build confidence in making informed decisions and in fulfilling your role in an IMT with regards to Wildlife Response. This will allow you to experience the various oil spill scenarios and complexities to incorporate wildlife response into an overall spill response strategy.

It will establish the connections between Wildlife Response and other aspects of oil spill response and preparedness. The exercises and activities developed for this course are carefully prepared to enable you to make decisions you might encounter on an actual spill. Furthermore, several case studies are included in the course to demonstrate lessons learned that could be picked up from previous oil spill incidents.

The combination of exercises, activities and case studies are a great way to support improvement and raise the awareness and competencies in managing and handling oiled wildlife response.

The topics developed for the course promote a holistic view on decision-making on wildlife response and integration of wildlife response into the Incident Management System. The course includes topics on Regulatory Frameworks on Oiled Wildlife, Wildlife Response in Incident Management System (IMS) and Oil Spill Response Strategies and Wildlife Response.
