This course provides the fundamental knowledge required for operational staff to become familiar with basic oil spill response operations using Tier 1 resources.

Develop your oil spill response fundamentals knowledge and first responder tactical skills in this course designed specifically for those with responsibilities working on jetties and wharves.

On this unique course of theoretical and practical training, you'll develop a sound understanding of the use of different response techniques and gain an appreciation of all the basic aspects of oil spill response.


Is this course for me?

This course is perfect for those relatively inexperienced in oil spill response. It is suitable for those who will conduct the initial response within the Emergency Response Team. This course is ideal for operational and marine staff with duties on jetties and wharves:

  • Personnel required to operate within the Emergency Response Team, including site safety positions
  • Operational and maintenance staff required to execute response tactics infield
  • Marine teams required to deploy equipment or support with small boat operations
  • Logistics staff required to support the infield operations.


What will I learn?

The table-top and practical exercises within this course aim to equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a key member of an oil spill response team; one with practical spill equipment knowledge and handling experience.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Overview of oil spill response
  • Fates and effects of oil, potential environmental and economic impacts and the importance of preparedness
  • Challenges and complexities of response management
  • Response techniques used during an incident, including practical elements, conducting shoreline and offshore response
  • The hazards and risks that responders face in an oil spill environment and how these may be mitigated
  • Waste handling, storage and disposal facilities for waste recovered during spill response operations.
