Course details

Aerial surveillance gives you pertinent information to justify initial response options and information to base your decisions for future operations. On this course you’ll be given the skills and knowledge to perform aerial surveillance missions during an oil spill response and expected output for planning purposes.

Good surveillance outputs can be the difference between successful or poor planning. This course will help you develop your tactical skills in carrying out aerial surveillance missions, understand how and when different missions should occur and how the many various factors influence your aerial surveillance activities.

Is this course for me?

  • Operational staff required to conduct aerial surveillance missions and feed information back into the incident management team
  • Operational staff required to interpret and action aerial surveillance data and reports that will impact response decisions.
  • Oil Spill Responders, Supervisors and Managers requiring aerial surveillance experience

What will I learn?

Taught by experts with extensive practical experience, this course covers the fundamentals of aerial surveillance as a key response tool, from conducting a mission and interpreting the data outputs, to the influences affecting aerial surveillance missions.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Assess the location and extent of oiling from the air and quantify the oil observed
  • Data from satellites and modelling outputs, learning how this, along with fates of oil spills at sea, can influence the type and location of aerial surveillance missions
  • Aircraft safety as an important factor whilst carrying out aerial surveillance
  • Importance of communicating findings back to the incident management team
