About

OSRL & Industry: Outreach

The ultimate goal for the Joint Industry Project (JIP) Outreach Programme is for the industry to have the ability to use all of the response tools on a NEBA supported pre-approved basis in every country where the industry operates.

OSRL has a significant role to play in achieving this goal and is well placed to represent the industry in the wider dissemination and adoption of the key industry messages, supported by a newly developed suite of communication tools.

Our outreach takes many forms but some of the key channels we employ include:

  • Training courses
  • Presenting output and engaging with stakeholders at conferences and seminars
  • Membership engagement activities
  • Technical forums
  • Innovative use of website and social media channels

In 2014, we piloted the concept of the Confident Ambassador. This programme was designed to give all staff (technical and non-technical) exposure to the scan/glance communication materials woven into a broader appreciation of the industry Oil Spill Preparedness and Response issues.

The programme was designed to unleash a powerful force-multiplier effect whereby all staff are familiarised with the tools and given the confidence to make convincing arguments in social situations amongst peers, friends and family. The resulting ripple effect, within and outside the OSRL network, should help reinforce principles of industry good practice.

OSRL's Three Key Industry Messages:

1.Tiered Preparedness & Response
Define and structure response capability, enable cascading of resources, efficient integration of industry capability.

2. Net Environmental Benefit Analysis
Select response options to minimise impacts, engage with stakeholders, follow a defined process before, during and after a spill.

3. Overcoming Barriers
Regulatory barriers that restrict full use of the response toolbox, administrative barriers that restrict ability to cascade resources effectively, logistical barriers that prevent effective response.
