Oil Trader, UNIPEC, Joins Oil Spill Response as Associate Shipping Member

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) announced today that leading energy trader, UNIPEC, has joined its growing roster of Associate Shipping members. Commencing the 10th of February, its membership provides UNIPEC with access to a range of response and preparedness services to support its global shipping activities.

UNIPEC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group) and one of China’s largest crude oil importers. UNIPEC’s principal businesses include oil products and LNG trading, as well as storage and logistics.

UNIPEC is committed to meeting global energy demand responsibly, reflected in the decision to join OSRL, as Mr Chen Gang, the Managing Director of UNIPEC, explains:

“In recent years, UNIPEC has been chartering oil tankers, increasingly, for their global operation. As a socially responsible company, UNIPEC’s shipping safety management is underpinned by our vision of “zero accident, zero pollution”. In this regard, joining OSRL as a Shipping Associate Member is consistent with our organisation’s values and vision. We believe UNIPEC will be able to continually improve its maritime safety management through leveraging OSRL’s extensive oil spill response capabilities and experience in our future collaboration.

OSRL’s cost-effective membership option for shipping-related companies offers a comprehensive level of service, with guaranteed and immediate response, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Unlike other industry solutions, OSRL’s tailored package provides both world-class advisory support and a dedicated, global response capability - significantly reducing the complexity of managing an incident and coordinating remediation efforts, wherever it happens.

Darren Waterman, Regional Director (Asia Pacific) for OSRL, commented on UNIPEC arrival:

“UNIPEC attaches great importance to reducing pollution and the overall impact of its activity, which very much aligns with OSRL’s mission and the services we offer to the global shipping industry.  We look forward to working together to enhance UNIPEC’s existing preparedness and response capability further.”

Robert Limb, CEO of OSRL, added:

“As the world of shipping continues to evolve, we’re seeing a growing number of shipping owners and operators taking proactive steps to manage response-related risk. By augmenting existing subscriptions with more comprehensive and agile levels of protection through highly experienced providers like OSRL, our members are demonstrating their commitment to environmental responsibility and a sustainable maritime environment.”

Shipping industry members benefit from:

  • Five days of free, on-site technical advice and response support from up to five OSRL personnel,
  • A single point of contact to activate the service, covering both technical advice and physical remediation efforts,
  • Resources and personnel at strategically located hubs around the world to minimise response time,
  • A unique pool of multilingual industry experts, with a broad range of skills from planning, training and exercises, through to response and post-spill services,
  • Preferential rates for training courses and additional response services,
  • A dedicated aerial logistics network and dispersant capability.
