ICCS 2009: Doing our bit for the environment

5 October 2009

International Coastal Cleanup 2009 - 19th September

The International Coastal Cleanup is an annual event conducted in over 100 countries, where thousands of volunteers comb the beaches, mangroves and waterways for litter. The data collected on the trash serves to raise awareness and helps to support environmental organisations in pushing for policy changes.

The staff who volunteered their time for the environment.

On 19th September, Oil Spill Response participated in this significant event for the second year running as part of the company’s initiative to reduce our carbon footprint. Our volunteers woke up in the wee hours of the morning to gather at Changi Beach. Even some family members came to pitch in. After a short briefing, we got to work straight away and scoured the shoreline for trash.

Family members also participated in the cleanup effort.

Unusual kinds of litter washed up on the beach.

After a fruitful hour, we collected an astounding 40kg of trash from a seemingly clean beach. The main part of the trash consisted of cigarettes and those generated from shoreline recreational activities such as styrofoam pieces.

Thank you to all for the sweat and effort in cleaning up the beach!
