Oil Spill Response Limited - OSPRI

The Oil Spill Preparedness Regional Initiative for Caspian, Black Sea and Central Eurasia (OSPRI) has been established by a group of oil companies to promote proven, credible, integrated and sustainable oil spill response capability in this strategically important region. These companies ( BG Group, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, ExxonMobil, Inpex, OMV Petrom, Shell, Statoil and Total) are all major investors in the region and jointly fund OSPRI, with IPIECA providing management and coordination.

OSPRI is therefore a regional mechanism which enables IPIECA to implement the Global Initiative (GI) principles of “working together” needed to build national oil spill preparedness and response capacity in partnership with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).  OSPRI and IMO have signed a Statement of Intent as a demonstration of their joint commitment to these aims.

IPIECA oversight provides centralised coordination of industry governance and integration of international good practice however the successful implementation of the project requires the active support and participation from the region’s business units.

OSPRI does not replace individual operators' oil spill contingency planning and it is not a response organisation providing resources to deal with incidents.  Rather it is aligned efforts amongst the members to ensure that the overall framework of oil spill preparedness at national and regional levels meets international standards of good practice and is effective.

OSRL is a Technical Partner of IPIECA and works collaboratively with the OSPRI members (the majority of which are also OSRL members) to support the delivery of OSPRI activities, including training events, workshops, meetings and advocacy opportunities.
